Pippa Bartolotti in Penarth

Pippa Bartolotti, the leader of the Wales Green Party, will be visiting Penarth on Tuesday 17th April to support local Green Party candidate Anthony Slaughter. Anthony is standing in the St Augustine’s ward in next month’s Local Government elections.

Pippa Bartolotti, Anthony Slaughter and local Green Party members and supporters will be hosting a ‘Green Information’ stall at the Windsor Road entrance to Windsor Arcade from 2pm to 3pm.  This will give Penarth residents an opportunity to find out more about Green Party policies and the role that Green Party councillors have played in Councils across the U.K. and also to ask Anthony any questions they might have about his local campaign.
The group will also be visiting local shop ‘Jo’s Organics’ to highlight  the importance of locally owned independent retailers both to the local economy and maintaining a town’s individuality.

Penarth Local Tree Forum

There has been growing concern amongst local residents in recent years about the worrying number of mature trees being cut down in the town.

Trees are an invaluable part of any townscape and play vital roles in helping maintain biodiversity, improving air quality and offer many benefits to people’s health and wellbeing.

They are also a precious part of the town’s natural heritage and help make the ‘Garden by the Sea’ such a pleasant place to live.

The Vale Council do try to plant two trees for every one they remove but often not in the same area or community which is of little comfort to those seeing their local trees disappear.

Whilst appreciating that the Council may often find itself in a tricky situation with regards to legal and safety issues with certain trees, the Vale Green Party do feel that there is a need for more open and inclusive consultations with the public.

The Vale Green Party would like to see the establishment of a Penarth Tree Forum similar to the body set up in Bristol. The Bristol Tree Forum brings together organisations and individuals together with the Council in regular meetings to help manage and formulate local tree policy.

The Tree Forum was set up following campaigning by BristolStreetTrees.org who lobbied the council on four fundamental issues that are equally important here in Penarth. - Stopping the removal of trees in the public realm without prior consultation - Instigating a replacement programme for those trees that had been removed. - Planting new trees in new public locations. - Planning succession planting to balance anticipated future tree removal or loss.

The Vale Green Party is also strongly in favour of the introduction of voluntary Parish Tree Wardens to help monitor the condition of the town’s trees.

We need to take steps now to ensure that future generations can enjoy the same beauty and variety of trees in the town as we do today.
